Glossary
What the words in these docs and the Stardeck dashboard mean.
For how these fit together, see How Stardeck Works.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| App | One product you build and publish on Stardeck, with its own code repository. The dashboard sometimes calls it a project. |
| Branch | A separate line of work on an app, with its own sandbox and preview, that doesn't touch the live app until it's merged. See Feature Branches. |
| Business type | The kind of business an app is set up for, such as Restaurant or café or Spa or salon. It switches some features off and renames pages. See Modules. |
| Coding agent | An AI agent on your computer, such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, that writes your app's code and reaches Stardeck over MCP. See Quickstart. |
| Customer agent | A Starcat agent that answers your customers on LINE, Facebook, Instagram or your website. See Customer Agents. |
| Data store | A database for an app's records, such as orders, bookings and customers. You choose which of its branches each environment uses. See Data Stores. |
| Deployment | A running copy of an app in one environment. |
| Developer mode | An organization setting in Settings → General that shows the app-building tools: code, previews, sandboxes and developer settings. Anyone can keep it on for themselves under Preferences. |
| Environment | Where a copy of the app runs: sandbox, preview, staging or production. See Environments. |
| Environment variable | A setting the app reads when it runs, such as an API key, set per environment. See Environment Variables. |
| Features in use | The page in an app's own admin where the business owner turns features on and off for staff. See Modules. |
| Graviton | The code-level rules for a Stardeck app: its SDKs, file layout and constraints. Only developers need it. See Building on Graviton. |
| Knowledge store | Your organization's shared documents and policies, which Starcat reads before answering. See Starcat. |
| Library Module | One of five always-on Modules that every feature Module builds on, such as formatting and the UI kit. They have no screens. See Library Modules. |
| MCP | Model Context Protocol, the standard that lets a coding agent such as Claude Code use Stardeck's tools. See AI Integrations. |
| Module | A feature Stardeck builds and maintains, such as POS or Booking, that ships inside every app. See Modules. |
| Organization | Your company's account on Stardeck. Its members, apps and billing belong to it. See Members & Roles. |
| Preview | A deployment of a branch at its own link, for sharing work before it goes live. See Sandbox & Preview. |
| Production | The live app your customers use, at your-slug.stardeck.site or your own domain. See Publishing & Deployment. |
| Publish | Deploy the app to production. |
| Sandbox | The private, non-live copy of an app for building and testing. An app you run on your computer reads the sandbox's data, and Starcat Developer works in the sandbox in the cloud. A new app's sandbox shares production's data until you split them. See Sandbox & Preview. |
| Skill | A saved set of instructions an agent follows to do a job the same way each time. See Skills. |
| Slug | The short name in an app's address: the lamp-coffee in lamp-coffee.stardeck.site. You choose it when you create the app. |
| Staging | A 24-hour copy of the app on a fresh copy of production data, for testing against real records. See Staging. |
| Stardeck CLI | The @stardeckai/cli command that creates apps, connects your coding agent, pulls the local environment and deploys. See Quickstart. |
| Stardeck Edge | A small machine at your location that connects the app to receipt printers, cash drawers and customer displays. See Stardeck Edge. |
| Starcat | The AI agent for your whole organization. It reads and acts on your apps and knowledge but doesn't change their code. See Starcat. |
| Starcat Developer | The AI agent in an app's Build tab that writes the app's code from a conversation in the browser, for when you can't run a coding agent locally. See Starcat Developer. |
| Starlens | Stardeck's document reader. It turns photos, PDFs, audio and video into the fields your app needs. See Starlens. |
| Surface | An experience inside an app for one audience or device, with its own name, URL and icon, such as a counter register or a booking page. See Surfaces. |
| Ultra mode | A Starcat Developer mode for large changes: several writers work in parallel and the agent tests its own work, within a spending budget. See Ultra Mode. |
| Update | A new version of Stardeck's Modules, merged into your app when you take it. See Updates. |
| Visibility | Who can open an app: anyone, your team, or invited people only. See App Visibility. |
