Manage an Edge machine
Monitor Edge status, change Wi-Fi, understand updates and LEDs, and safely remove or replace hardware.
Manage paired Edge machines under Settings → Edge Devices. Expand a machine to see its network, peripherals, displays, and update status.
Understand machine status
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Pairing | The machine record exists but physical setup is not complete |
| Online | The machine is checking in and can receive jobs |
| Offline | Stardeck has not received recent check-ins from the machine |
| Decommissioned | You removed the machine. It has been told to wipe its pairing and is kept only so you can delete its record |
Also check the last seen time on the machine's row. It tells you whether an offline event is recent or whether the machine has been unreachable for a longer period.
Read the status LEDs
| LED behavior | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Flashing green | The machine is unpaired and waiting for setup |
| Flashing red | The paired machine cannot reach Stardeck |
| Normal activity | The machine is healthy and the LEDs have returned to their standard behavior |
A red LED starts after repeated failed check-ins, not after a single dropped request.
Change Wi-Fi
When the machine is still online:
Open Network
Expand the Edge machine and find Network. Check its current Wi-Fi name, signal, and IP address.
Forget the saved Wi-Fi
Select Forget & show hotspot and confirm the warning.
The machine forgets its saved Wi-Fi and temporarily goes offline.
Join the setup network
Near the Edge machine, join Stardeck-Setup-XXXX on a phone. The setup page should open
automatically; otherwise, open http://10.42.0.1.
Enter the new network details
Select the new Wi-Fi network and enter its password. The machine keeps its existing pairing, so no new Stardeck pairing code is required.
Confirm it reconnects
Return to the dashboard and wait for the machine to show Online with the new network.
Forget & show hotspot requires someone to be physically near the machine. If Ethernet is connected, the machine stays online and does not open its setup network. Disconnect Ethernet and restart the machine before continuing with Wi-Fi setup.
If a paired machine starts with no usable network—for example, after its Wi-Fi password changes—it
waits about two minutes and then opens Stardeck-Setup-XXXX automatically. Reconnect it using the
same Wi-Fi-only flow.
A local network with a broadband outage still counts as a network connection. In that case, the Edge machine stays on the local network and flashes red instead of opening its setup network.
Automatic updates
Edge software updates are automatic. The machine periodically checks for a signed release, downloads it, applies it, and confirms that it can start and reach Stardeck.
If the new version fails its health check, the machine automatically returns to the previous working version. A power interruption during an update is also recovered after the next boot.
| Update status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Idle | No update is currently running |
| Downloading | The machine is downloading a signed update |
| Applying | The machine is switching to the new version |
| Failed | The update could not be downloaded, verified, or installed |
| Rolled back | The new version failed its check and the machine restored the prior version |
Do not unplug the machine while it shows Applying unless there is a physical safety issue.
Move, replace, or remove a machine
- Moving it to a new network: use Forget & show hotspot before unplugging it when possible.
- Replacing a printer: configure the replacement, then re-point the app's existing alias.
- Replacing the Edge machine: pair the new machine, grant it to the same apps, and re-create or repair the affected aliases.
- Retiring or transferring it: remove its app grants, clear any displays, then remove the machine from Edge Devices.
Removing a machine makes its existing app access and identity unusable. Do not remove it just to fix Wi-Fi or replace a printer.
Remove device marks the machine Decommissioned and tells it to wipe its pairing. A machine
that is powered on and online does this within about a minute, then comes back on its own
Stardeck-Setup-XXXX network, ready to pair again. It keeps its saved Wi-Fi and its installed
software version. A machine that is switched off or offline is told the next time it checks in.
Decommissioned machines stay listed, folded away at the bottom of Edge Devices. Deleting the record is a separate, deliberate second step.
Give the hardware to another organization
A machine's serial number can only be registered by one organization at a time, so a transfer needs the record gone, not just decommissioned:
Remove the machine
Wait for it to reset
Power it on with internet access and confirm it returns to Stardeck-Setup-XXXX. If you delete
the record before it checks in, the machine takes about an hour to notice on its own. You can
also reset it by hand using the gesture below.
Delete permanently
Open the Decommissioned section, choose Delete permanently, and the serial number is released for the new organization.
Fix a machine by hand
Use this when you can reach the hardware but not the dashboard. Tap the power button, or Backspace on a USB keyboard (the only method on machines without a power button).
| Taps within five seconds | What happens | LED signal | Keeps |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 to 7 | Forgets the saved Wi-Fi, restarts into setup mode | Rapid red flutter | Pairing and configuration |
| 8 or more | Factory reset: clears pairing and Wi-Fi | Green strobe (~2 s) | Software version only |
- The machine waits the full five seconds before acting. 2 to 4 taps do nothing.
- A held press is not a tap. Holding the power button is a hardware power-off.
- Any other key cancels a keyboard sequence.
Stardeck-Setup-XXXXappears within about two minutes.- Five taps on a machine with Ethernet only drops the saved Wi-Fi. It stays online.
- The power button works for gestures after one restart on Edge 0.6.0+. Five taps need 0.7.0+. Check Software on the machine. The keyboard needs no restart.
Factory reset
Tap eight times within five seconds. You need the Wi-Fi password and a fresh pairing code from the dashboard afterwards. It can't be undone.
If you can reach the machine's setup page over the network, Diagnostics → Factory reset does the same, confirmed with the serial number. Ten wrong serials pause it for a minute.
